Mac Carroll Walks it Off in Game Two to Split the Doubleheader

The doubleheader between the Bruins and Screaming Eagles brought nothing but excitement all afternoon at Conestee Park.

"I am extremely thankful for everyone on the team and the grit they have shown the entire year," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "The Lord has given us a great season so far with an incredible group of guys that is only getting closer together."

Game 1:

Toccoa Falls offense was blistering hot in game one, and took advantage of each free base they were given. They scored four runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth, and five runs in the fifth. All of that added up to a huge 17-1 lead after the fifth inning.

But the Bruins had some fight left in them. In the sixth inning, the Bruins scored four runs to bring it a little closer. The loaded the bases and Zay Brandt hit an RBI single that advanced all runners. This was followed by a double from Bryson French that scored two runs. The Bruins loaded the bases again where David Medina was walked which gave the Bruins another run. The score was 17-5.

In the seventh inning, the Bruins continued to fight further. Heads up base running by Davonte Brown gave the Bruins the first run of six scored in the valiant effort. David Twiddy followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Mannix Crawford. Bryson French was big again with a 2-RBI single. French ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly by David Medina, and Gabe Gearhart took home on a passed ball.

Even with the big effort by the Bruins, they fell in game one with a final score of 18-11.

Game 2:

The excitement at the end of the first game does not compare to the excitement brought throughout part two of the doubleheader.

Tillman Padgett had another quality start on the mound which helped spark energy early for the Bruins. They struck first in the second inning. Sam Gonzalez reached base on an error, and Mac Carroll hustled home to score. This was shortly followed by Cody Kirkpatrick hitting a single that scored two more runs and gave the Bruins an early 3-0 lead.

The Screaming Eagles fought back and were able to get all three runs back in the fifth inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, the game went into the last inning tied at 3-3. A flame ignited on the Toccoa Falls side and they scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 8-3 lead. They got comfortable because all needed was three more outs to take the series win.

But the Bruins didn't lose fight or focus. They did not care what the scoreboard said. Zay Brandt started the inning with a leadoff single. After this, momentum started to swing the Bruins direction, because Cody Kirkpatrick came up to the plate and hit a home run to bring the game back within three runs. Cayden Kennedy drew a walk before Conley Burk hit a double. Evan Johnson kept the offense hot and reached on an error, and Kennedy came in to score! The score now stood at 8-6. Bryson French laid down a bunt just to try and advance the runners into scoring position, but the bunt was perfect. French loaded the bases, and the Screaming Eagles still didn't have an out.

Mac Carroll stepped to the plate with confidence knowing he could at least tie the game with a base hit. Coach Kyle Morrison called time to talk to Carroll and try and keep him calm in this huge situation. "He told me that he was going to hit it out," Coach Morrison said. That statement came true when Carroll cleared the left field wall for a walk-off grand slam. The Bruins dugout and Conestee Park erupted as the Bruins came away with a huge 10-8 victory against their south region opponent.

"So proud of the guys today," Coach Morrison exclaimed. "They refused to quit all day long even in game one when they were down by 16 runs. They didn't care about the scoreboard and just kept going. This weekend was so good for our team!"

This is now two straight series wins for the Bruins heading into spring break. After the week off, they face off against Spartanburg Methodist College on Tuesday, April 1 before heading to Toccoa Falls for another series against the Screaming Eagles.
