Bruins Golf Plays Through Wind at the Trailblazer Spring Invitational

The Bruins golf team wrapped up their time of competition with a ninth place finish at the Trailblazer Spring Invitational hosted by North Greenville University.

"The tournament was profitable for us in many ways," Head Coach Dennis Scott said. "Gaining experience when competing in a strong field like this is never a wasted opportunity. It gives us perspective, teaches us resilience, and develops mental toughness."

Brandon Autry, Peter Zhong, Dakota Holt, Grant Camfield, and Luke Jett all stayed in the area on the university's spring break to compete for the Bruins.

"I am very thankful for these guys who gave up a couple of days of spring break to commit to getting better and to building our program so we can reach the goals we have for the fall season," said Coach Scott.

Monday started strong when Peter Zhong birdied his very first hole. To follow, the Bruins had a large amount of success on the par-five, 16th hole. Autry started that success with his first of four tournament eagles. Holt, Camfield, and Zhong all birdied, and Jett parred.

After the first nine holes, it was Zhong leading for the Bruins at +1. Not long into the second nine, Autry eagled again to improve his score more. Camfield birdied both par-fives on the second nine and ended the day on a high note.

Heading into Tuesday, the Bruins focused on improving from the first round. "One of our goals in each tournament is to improve our score in each round and we did accomplish that," Coach Scott said. Autry and Holt both improved on Monday's round by at least five shots! This was a tough task to do with the windy conditions.

Autry eagled twice again which led to his great round finishing at +9 and tied for fifth place overall. Zhong played a consistent round with a similar score to Monday and finished at +17 and tied for 27th place overall. Holt improved his first round's score by seven shots with a strong front nine and finished the tournament at +21 and tied for 36th place overall. Camfield and Jett followed closely behind finishing in 52nd and 53rd place overall with scores of +33 and +38 on the tournament.

As a team, the Bruins improved from Monday by nine shots and finished 9th as a team at the Trailblazer Spring Invitational.

"While we had an amazing number of birdies, nine in Round One and eight in Round Two for a total of 17, and more eagles (four) in a single tournament than we have ever had, we still had too many "big numbers". The double-bogeys are our achilles heal," Coach Scott said.

The Bruins take the course next at the anticipated Competitor's Cup against Columbia International University on April 14-15 in Columbia, South Carolina.
