Bruins Drop Back-to-Back Games in Saturday Doubleheader

From the J.B. Red Owens Sports Complex in Easley, South Carolina, the Bob Jones University Bruins baseball team fell in both of their Saturday games against Alice Lloyd College. With today's losses, the Bruins now sit at 9-22 on the season.

"This weekend was rough," said Head Coach Kyle Morrison. "We had the lead in the last inning of both game one and game two, but Alice Lloyd just found a way to win. That's what winners do. We've got to learn to win. We've got to learn how to finish. Finishing a team off does not involve going scoreless the rest of the game after you've taken the lead."

He continued saying, "our pitchers did a phenomenal job this weekend. It was our offense that didn't get the job done. Game three was a bummer as well. It's hard to see that game not go our way especially after losing the first two. Alice Lloyd is a 19-14 team this year. And we had a lead on them in the last inning twice this weekend and a lead in game three."

Yesterday, the Bruins and Eagles met for the start of their second series of the season where Alice Lloyd College overtook the Bruins in the top of the ninth inning to win game one 6-7.

Back on the field ready for a full day of baseball, Mack Ritter took to the mound to open game one of the doubleheader where he struck out the leadoff batter. A five-three double play ended the top of the first inning.

Cody Kirkpatrick walked to get on base and open the first inning for Bob Jones. After two outs, Conley Burk singled to keep the inning alive. Next up, Evan Johnson slammed the ball over the fence for a two RBI home run, his first of the season.

The 2-0 lead for Bob Jones held until the top of the third inning where the Eagles came back to knot the score 2-2.

In the bottom of fourth, Angelo Gomez and Bryson French each singled to start the at bat for the Bruins. A sacrifice bunt by Max Lucien scored Gomez. Next, Kirkpatrick stepped up for a RBI double to score French and put the Bruins back ahead 4-2. The Eagles responded in the next inning to cut the Bruins lead down to just one run.

BJU was unable to get any offense in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings as they went three up, three down at their time at the plate.

As the final inning came around, the Eagles were able to mount a comeback and overtake the Bruins with four runs scored. Bob Jones worked hard to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they left three players stranded as the Eagles won game one 7-4.

After a brief break, the two teams were back on the field for game two of the day. Like game one of the day, the Bruins got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single by Isaiah Brandt scored Jacob Highsmith to double the lead for the Bruins.

A run in the top of the third followed by two more runs in the fourth inning, and one more in the fifth put the Eagles ahead 4-2. While the Bruins looked to add several runs to their total, the Eagles kept the Bruins off the scoreboard. After seven innings of play, the Bruins saw themselves fall again to Alice Lloyd with a final score of 6-2.

"We're simply trying to learn how to win," said Morrison. "If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. There is no doubt that our team can compete, Lord willing, we'll get the job done from here on out."

Up next, the Bruins will travel to Montreat, North Carolina for a Tuesday night road contest against Montreat College.
