Bruins Fall Short in a Battle Against the Cavaliers

In a back-and-forth battle with the Montreat College Cavaliers, the Bruins fall just short with a final score of 5-4.

"We've got to finish," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "Nobody is going to do the job for us."

Jason Quillin started on the mound for the Bruins and was simply fantastic. Montreat had a really difficult time reading Quillin's curveball, and that made it difficult to break out and put a lot of runs on the board. The Cavaliers scored first in the bottom of the third inning after a couple of base hits.

In the top of the fifth, the Bruins answered back and took the lead. After a couple of walks to get runners on, Conley Burk hit a huge three-run home run. The Cavaliers scored a run of their own in the fifth inning to tie it 3-3.

The resilience of the Bruins did not go away, though, as they retook the lead again in the seventh inning. After getting a couple of runners on, the Cavaliers made a bad throw to first base on Burk's grounder, and Zay Brandt came around to score. But a lot like the fifth inning, the Cavaliers did not let the Bruins have the lead long. They scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after Quillin was pulled.

The last two innings of the game were scoreless, and the game ended in a 5-4 Cavaliers win.

After the game, Coach Morrison emphasized the big moments. "We've got to want the big moments in the most important parts of the game," he said. "We cannot continue to shy away from the moment."

Jason Quillin pitched six innings striking out five batters while only walking two. He gave up seven hits but was able to stay calm and limit the damage. This was Quillin's best outing of the season.

The Bruins now look towards a weekend in Laurel, Mississippi where they will take on the Southeastern Baptist College Chargers in a weekend series. The first game is scheduled for Friday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m.
