The Bruins were not able to put enough runs on the board to overcome the Chargers in a high-scoring 12-10 loss to begin the weekend series.
The Bruins had a lot of aggressive base running that helped them score some runs against the Chargers. They began the game in the top of the first inning when Kyle Prouse scored on a wild pitch. The Chargers were able to answer back and score a couple in the bottom of the inning to take the early lead.
The rest of the game was very back-and-forth with many more runs to come. The Bruins scored another run on a fielder's choice hit by Davante Brown to knot the score 2-2 in the second inning. In the third inning, the Bruins scored two more runs off of a bunt by Evan Johnson that scored Kyle Prouse and then a sac fly by Cayden Kennedy that scored Conley Burk. But again, the Chargers answered with a two-run homer to tie it 4-4.
Evan Johnson tallied another RBI on a double in the fifth inning before the Chargers offense did the same in the bottom of the inning to tie it 5-5. After a quick sixth inning, the Bruins took the lead back in a big seventh inning. The Bruins hit six singles in the inning, and they were accompanied by many wild throws around the infield by the Chargers' defense. The Bruins were able to score five runs to take a 10-5 lead. Cayden Kennedy, Sam Gonzalez, and Cody Kirkpatrick were all credited with an RBI.Â
The bottom of the seventh inning started on an incredible play at shortstop by Bruins freshman Mannix Crawford to get the first out. After, however, the Chargers were able to score two runs to bring their deficit back within three runs. The eighth inning was filled with struggle for the Bruins. After getting out in order on offense, they gave up five runs in the inning to give the Chargers a 12-10 lead.
The Bruins were unable to answer back this time, and the game of many runs ended in a 12-10 loss.
The series continues tomorrow against Southeastern Baptist College with a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m.
