The #5 Bob Jones University Bruins completed their first games of the postseason with a win and a loss to open the NCCAA South Region Tournament in Oakland Park, Florida. After rain paused their game on Monday, the Bruins wrapped up game one of the tournament with a 12-7 win on Tuesday over #4 Southeastern Baptist College before falling to the top-seeded University of Fort Lauderdale later in the evening.
As game one against #4 Southeastern Baptist College began in Oakland Park, Florida on Monday morning, Kyle Prouse walked with the bases loaded to score Conley Burk and put the Bruins on top 1-0.
After Angelo Gomez flied out to open the second inning, Sam Gonzalez walked and Cody Kirkpatrick was hit by a pitch to get two runners on base. An RBI single by Zay Brandt doubled the lead for Bob Jones. With Evan Johnson up to the plate, he hit the ball in play, but an error by the shortstop allowed two more runs to score putting the Bruins up 4-0.
The Chargers responded with an RBI single in the bottom of inning two.
In the top of the third inning, Gomez added one more run to the Bruins' total as he scored on a balk.
Rain began to fall pausing the game just three innings in. Weather postponed all contests on Monday. The two teams were back on the field on Tuesday ready to complete the game.
The Bruins held on to their 5-1 advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning where the Chargers knotted the score after recording four runs.
In the sixth inning, Gonzalez hit one out of the park, but the umpired ruled that he missed the plate to take away the run from Bob Jones. Johnson stepped up to the plate and delivered a two RBI double to put the Bruins back on top.
Southeastern Baptist came back to tie the game once again in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings in the postseason tournament. The Bruins came up big in the final inning. With the bases loaded, Mannix Crawford opened the scoring after being hit by a pitch to send a runner across home plate. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Prouse and Swarms added two more to the Bruins score. A home run by Angelo Gomez put the nail in the coffin as the Bruins completed the upset in the 12-7 victory.
With their game one win, the Bruins were back in action Tuesday evening to face the top-seeded University of Fort Lauderdale.
The two teams battled to keep it 0-0 through the opening innings. But in the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles posted six runs to see the Bruins trail early.
The Bruins responded in the top of the fourth with some aggressive offense. An RBI single from Conley Burk scored Mannix Crawford to get Bob Jones on the scoreboard. An RBI double by Cayden Kennedy added one more run for the Bruins.
The University of Fort Lauderdale scored once more in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Down to their final three outs of the game, the Bruins stepped up to the plate looking to make a run in the top of the seventh inning. An RBI by Gonzalez tacked on one final run for the Bruins as they fell to the Eagles 7-3.
With today's results, the Bruins' hopes of a region championship remain alive. The Bruins will play in an elimination contest on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Tuesday night's elimination game between Southeastern Baptist College and Toccoa Falls College.
