The Bruins golf team began their season today in a match play exhibition against Montreat College at the Greer Golf Club. In match play, a golfer from each team goes head-to-head and competes one hole at a time. The golfer with the most holes won after 18 is the winner. With seven matchups in today's exhibition, the clinching amount of points was four, which the Bruins surpassed getting 4.5 points to the Cavaliers 2.5.
"It was a pretty solid start to the season with this exhibition win against Montreat," Head Coach Denny Scott said. "They have a solid line-up and took the lead early in most of the matches. Our guys kept focus and knew if we were patient we would have a chance to make a run on the back nine. Thankfully, we did."
Brandon Autry went first today and played in a close match the whole way. After nine holes, he was two under par but one hole down to his opponent. He took the match all the way into the last hole and came away with a tie giving the Bruins half a point.
Dakota Holt started his round with a birdie on the first hole and didn't slow down. He held the lead on his opponent all round and ended up clinching the match on the 17th hole.
Connor Hairgrove battled through wrist soreness and unfriendly greens but still played a quality round. He stung a drive on hole 10 which gave him a boost, and he fought all the way to hole 17.Â
Eli DeVaughn dominated his match and was the first one to score a point for the Bruins on the 15th hole. The convincing win was almost capped off by a 78-foot eagle putt that was a hair from the cup. After the birdie was conceded, he won the match.
Brayden Joyner had quite the back nine after being three holes down at the turn. Being three down, there isn't a lot of wiggle room on the back nine. BJ used none and brought it all the way to the final hole with a chance to tie, but came up just short.
Lee Earl Jackson won his match after the 16th hole. The freshman's meticulous strategy paid off in big ways. After getting behind early, he came back to tie it at the turn. On the back nine, he took control winning a point for the Bruins.Â
Grant Camfield had quite the day on the course. He won three of the first four holes and never looked back. He was four up after nine holes and had a very short "back nine." After a birdie on hole 15, he won his match.
"We have a lot to build on from this tournament and the depth of this team is becoming more and more evident," Coach Scott said after the exhibition win. "We still have a lot of work to do in preparing for regionals at the end of the month, but this was an encouraging start."
The Bruins are back on the course next week when they travel down to Prestonburg, Kentucky to compete in the Maggie Mountain Invitational hosted by Alice Lloyd College.
