The Bruins volleyball team faced a full day of competition as they traveled to Misenheimer, North Carolina, for a Saturday tri-match against North Carolina Wesleyan University and Pfeiffer University. The Bruins came away just short in both matches.
As the first match of the day against North Carolina Wesleyan got underway, it was a back-and-forth effort to open the contest. The Bruins then went on a seven point scoring streak to take the lead. Behind a balanced offensive attack, BJU continued to play well and soon one the first set 20-17.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle, with both sides trading points deep into extra play. The Bruins finally broke through to secure the set 29-27, giving them a 2-0 match lead.
But the Battling Bishops weren't ready to back down. They regrouped and fought their way to a 25–23 win in the third set before outlasting the Bruins in a dramatic 30-28 fourth set.
With the match tied at two sets apiece, everything came down to the decisive fifth. The Bruins battled to the final points, but NCWU pulled out a 16-14 win to seal the comeback.
After a short break, the Bruins returned to the court to face Pfeiffer University. Carrying over their strong play, the Bruins struck first by taking the opening set 25-22. However, Pfeiffer answered, pulling away late in the second and third sets before edging out the Bruins in a tight 25–23 finish to take the 3-1 win.
Following the game, Coach Christa Schlichting said, "we battled today against two good NCAA DIII teams. While we were close in sets, we struggled to score and finish when we really needed to."
The two hard-fought matches left the Bruins with a 6-11 record on the season.
Up next, the Bruins are back home for back-to-back games in the Davis Field House.
