Volleyball Team Goes 1-1 on Opening Day of Region Kickoff Tournament

The Bob Jones University Bruins volleyball team split day one of the NCCAA Region Kickoff tournament on their home court of the Davis Field House. After sweeping Trinity College of Jacksonville 3-0, the Bruins battled for five sets in a loss to Pensacola Christian College.

In the first match against Trinity College of Jacksonville, the Bruins controlled the tempo from the beginning. In the first set the Bruins powered to a 25-13 set victory before another quick 25-12 second set win. The TCJ Eagles got off to an early lead in the third before the Bruins went on an eight point run to regain the lead. They held pace through the rest of the set to complete the sweep with a 25-17 set win.

After a brief break, the Bruins were back on the court in the event of the weekend to face region rivals, the Pensacola Christian College Eagles. It was a strong start for BJU as they took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17. The Eagles rallied and came back to win the next three sets handing the home team a tough 3-2 loss.

Despite the defeat, the Bruins had several good performances. Hannah Goodwin led the team with 18 kills and added four blocks, while Stefanie Burke tallied 12 kills and four blocks. Goebert contributed four kills and a team-high four aces, while setter Elyse Vest dished out 20 assists.

Following the game, Coach Christa Schlichting said, "we had a great start to the match, but unfortunately we could not finish. While this loss will sting for a bit, we will learn and grow from this."

With the split, the Bruins move to 2-5 on the year and continue to build momentum early in the season.

The team is back in the Davis Field House for two more games tomorrow. At 10 a.m. the Bruins will face Baptist University of Florida before wrapping up the weekend against Ohio Christian University.
