From the beginning to the end, the Bruins controlled the rivalry matchup against the Pensacola Christian College Eagles and came away with a 88-71 win in front of huge home crowd at the Davis Field House.
"We executed well at the start of the game to give us momentum early on in the game," Head Coach Tony Miller said. "The guys showed great effort and played with heart the whole game, and that led us to be able to get all the guys in which was great."
The Bruins got out to blazing hot start tonight right after the tip which helped the crowd to get invested early. In the first five minutes of the game, the Bruins produced a 15-2 lead coming from incredible defense forcing turnovers and getting points from those turnovers. The Bruins forced nine turnovers in the first half while holding the Eagles to just 16% from the three-point line. On offense, they looked for downhill opportunities into the lane to finish at the basket, and they succeeded. First half points were spread around pretty evenly with Justin Skelton leading the team with eight points. The Eagles were able to go on a small run to bring the Bruins lead back to three points, but it never got any closer. The offensive pedal stayed pressed down, and the Bruins went into halftime with a 40-31 lead.
The control continued in the second half by the Bruins and the Eagles never came closer than a seven point deficit. Bruins were able to take advantage of Eagles foul trouble while the Eagles weren't really able to do the same of the Bruins foul trouble. Both teams were in bonus with nine minutes to go in the game, and everyone seemed to struggle a little bit from the free-throw line on both teams. Those struggles didn't get in the Bruins way, especially Justin Skelton and Bryson Felder who scored 17 and 10 in the second half. Bruins never looked back and beat the Eagles 88-71.
The Bruins had four scorers in double digits tonight. Skelton led all scorers with 25 points followed by Bryson Felder scoring 16 off the bench. Shad Vander Hart scored 15 accompanied by eight rebounds, and Brandon Wilkins ended with 10 points.
This win gets the Bruins back in the win column before playing Covenant College at 5:00 p.m. in the Davis Field House next Thursday, January 22.
