Box Score It was a heavily defensive match for the Bruins tonight and they only allowed one goal against a quality Brevard College team, and they fall 1-0.
"We knew this was going to be a really challenging game as Brevard is sitting second in a very tough NCAA DIII conference," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Despite this I thought we were able to control many moments of the game and we group defended very well and took away most of their attacks. We had been working on group defending and they did an excellent job keeping compact, communicating, and thwarting most of their attacks today. We lost our focus on a corner and got stung but otherwise extremely proud of the effort and no doubt this will have huge payoffs as we get closer to regionals."
The first half began and the Bruins held pretty good possession in their offensive half for the first several minutes of the match. The Tornados were able to settle in and spend the majority of the half on the attack. The Bruins defense and goalkeeper Margaret Provenzano played a great game keeping the attacks not as threatening as they could have been. The score was held at 0-0 for almost the whole half until the Tornados were able to score on a corner kick in the final minute of the half to give the Bruins a goal deficit heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Bruins did a great job possessing against the talented Tornados side. They began to connect on passes and have great communication along the back line. The Tornados were not able to get as many chances as in the first half. The main struggle of the night for the Bruins was getting the possession to move up the field to position themselves for a chance at a tying-goal. The score was 1-0 all the way down to the end when the Bruins got a corner kick with three minutes to go. Unfortunately, that chance came up empty and the Bruins fell 1-0 as the final score.
After the game, Bruins defender Ashley Frederick shared her thoughts: " We played very well during the game, especially on the defensive side and when maintaining possession in our defensive half. We struggled to get into the attacking half and finding our forwards, but I definitely see a lot of progress happening within our team."
Forward Lily Davis shared some words as well: "We defended really well today and got back in defense pretty quickly. But Brevard was able get a goal late in the first half from a corner. We did not have any luck on our attacking side but we were keeping possession on defense to try to find our attacking players."
The Bruins are now 3-5-3 heading into their next match on Friday at Alumni Stadium. They host Tuskegee University for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
