Bruins Split Saturday Doubleheader to Pick up Series Win

The Bob Jones University Bruins baseball team picked up their first series win of the season after splitting Saturday's doubleheader from Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina. Mid-Atlantic Christian University took the first game 1-0 before the Bruins responded with a high-scoring 18-13 win in game two of the day.

As game one got underway, Mackenzie Ritter got the nod as the starting pitcher for Bob Jones.

Through the first three innings, neither team could get the bats rolling. In the top fourth inning, the Mustangs got on the board to take the 1-0 lead.

That lead held through the rest of the game, and after seven innings, it was Mid-Atlantic with the 1-0 win.

Bob Jones finished with only two hits, coming from Henry Rumble and Zac Tyre.

After a brief break, the two teams were back on the field for game two.

The Bruins wasted no time setting the tone. In the bottom of the first, Bob Jones scored six runs on five hits to seize early momentum. A two-RBI double from Cayden Kennedy highlighted the inning, followed by a two-run double by Derek Farley and RBI knocks from Elijah Medrano and Mannix Crawford to build a 6-0 lead.

In the third, both teams added a run to the scoreboard. For the Bruins, David Henry scored on an error to push the advantage to 7-1.

The fifth inning proved decisive. After the Mustangs rallied for four runs in the top half to cut the deficit to 7-5, the Bruins exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bruins stretched the lead to 18-5.

In the top of the seventh inning, Mid-Atlantic looked to mount a late comeback. In the inning, the Mustangs added seven more runs to their total. However, the Bruins' bullpen ultimately shut the door to secure the 18-13 win over the Mustangs.

In the win, the Bruins finished with 13 hits and two errors.

With today's results, the Bruins now sit at 3-4 on the season.

Following the game, Head Coach Kyle Morrison said, "we challenged the team to be urgent from the get go. Ritter did a great job in the first game keeping it 1-0. In game two, we had a solid start and got up big. We're trying to learn in that circumstance. The dugout got lax in that last inning, but we have to continue with the standard, and the standard is all gas, no breaks. We can't let the scoreboard effect our mentality. By God's grace, we won the series. Hopefully, this builds some momentum."

Up next, the Bruins will take on Guilford College on February 21.
