The Bob Jones University baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Guilford College falling 4-3 in game one before dropping game two 5-4 in another close result.
As game one got underway in Greensboro, North Carolina, the game remained scoreless through the first few innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Guilford College got on the board with a solo home run.
The Bruins broke through in the fifth inning, turning the 0-1 game into a 3-1 advantage. After Mannix Crawford was hit by a pitch and stole second, Henry Rumble delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Cayden Kennedy followed with a run-scoring base hit, and Derek Farley laced an RBI double down the third-base line to cap the three-run frame.
The 3-1 lead for Bob Jones held until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Quakers tied the game with back-to-back homers. They grabbed the 4-3 lead late in the inning.
Bob Jones was unable to get any offense going in the final inning, and the 4-3 score held.
After a brief break, the two teams were back on the field for game two of the day. An error by Guilford in the first inning allowed the Bruins to take a 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last long as the Quakers responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the first to even the score.
As the Bruins went to bat in the second, Henry Rumble singled to send Jaden Blanco across home. The Quakers once again knotted the score 2-2
The Bruins added two more in the third inning when Kyle Prouse singled home a run and later scored on a wild pitch, giving Bob Jones a 4-2 edge.
Guilford responded with a decisive three-run bottom of the third to go up 5-4 over the Bruins.
The Bruins were unable to get any offense going in the final innings of the game and finished the game with a 5-4 loss.
Head Coach Kyle Morrison shared his thoughts following the game. "We've been having great performances from pitchers on the mound. Tillman Padgett and Mack Ritter did great today. But in the first game, we had bases loaded with nobody out and couldn't produce a single run. It's becoming a common theme in our losses. Same scenarios happened in the second game, and we left too many guys in scoring position. We need to start to hit with runners in scoring position. Period."
Up next, the Bruins are back home at Conestee Park for five home games next week, beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday.
