The Bruins hosted Morris College for the first time in program history tonight and split the double-header with them winning game one 13-3 and falling in game two 8-7 despite making a little comeback in the last inning.
"The first game felt like we were really coming out of our struggles with executing with runners on," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "Quillin did a great job attacking hitters and Pierce did a great job coming in at the back end of the game."
In the first game of evening, the Bruins jumped into control early and stayed there throughout the game. The scoring began in the first inning off an RBI-single by Elijah Medrano that scored Mannix Crawford. After the Hornets answered back in the top of the second, the Bruins scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Bruins loaded the bases and Angelo Gomez hit a two RBI-single. Henry Rumble followed with an RBI-single for himself before two runs were walked in. A few more runs were added by the Bruins in the third inning after Cayden Kennedy laced a two RBI-double. The Bruins continued to add more runs in the fifth inning, and these runs simply put the game out of reach of the Hornets. Rumble added to his game with two more RBIs on a double. The Hornets were able to add a couple of runs, but it was not enough to mount a comeback. The Bruins won game one 13-3.Â
Jason Quillin pitched a gem in the game one start. He pitched five and a third innings allowing three runs on five hits. His three-inning stretch of holding the Hornets scoreless allowed for the Bruins to get out in front. Ryan Pierce closed the game in relief allowing no hits and no runs in the final inning and two-thirds.
In game two, the Hornets jumped out in front with a run in each the second and third inning. Henry Rumble stayed blazing hot with another two-RBI double to tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. The Hornets were able to answer right back with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bruins did not give up. Mannix Crawford hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth to bring it back to 7-3. Then in the fifth, Jaden Blanco was walked with the bases loaded which brought in Alex Roberson to score and make it 7-4. The Bruins could not get any more runs from that situation. The Hornets scored on a sac-fly to extend their lead back to four runs in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bruins nearly made a comeback. Jacob Highsmith was walked to begin the inning before Evan Johnson hit an RBI-double to make it 8-5. Jaden Blanco followed with an RBI-single to score Johnson and make the game 8-6. Angelo Gomez was walked before Mannix Crawford grounded out which advanced the runners. David Henry followed with another groundout, but Travis Blackwell, who was running for Blanco, scored to make it 8-7. But that is how far the Bruins got as Rumble flew out to end the game.
Sterling Jones pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs (six earned) in his start. Noah Ezell pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief and only allowed one run on two hits. Gabe Swarms closed the game getting the final two outs for the Bruins.
"Credit Morris's hitters as they really put a hurting on the baseball," said Coach Morrison. "However, I still believe we beat ourselves as we didn't execute with bases loaded in the fifth and sixth inning and we had way too many strikeouts."
On the day, Mannix Crawford went a total 5-7 from the dish scoring four runs and batting in one. Henry Rumble went 4-8 with five RBIs. Evan Johnson went 3-4 and got walked three times.
The Bruins are encouraged as their bats woke up a little bit in this doubleheader, even though they still split with the Hornets. The Bruins will be back at Conestee Park this weekend for a three-game series against Trinity College of Jacksonville. Friday's game will begin at 6:00 p.m.
