Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Trenton Goldsmith

Bruins Double-Overtime Win Is Largest Point Total in Bruin History

The fans in the Davis Field House and watching abroad were treated with an offensive battle between the Bruins and region opponent Baptist University of Florida Eagles where the Bruins were triumphant in a double-overtime thriller with a final score of 139-131. This marks the highest scoring game in Bruins history and the highest scoring game across the NCCAA this season.

From the beginning until the end, it was a back-and-forth show the whole time. Both offenses played with a fury and scored the basketball at will. In the first half, both teams held a lead but neither them ever got up by more than eight points. The Eagles were burying three-pointers and the Bruins would come right back down and drive strong to the basket. The points for the Bruins were spread out in the first half and it stayed that way until the double-overtime buzzer. Trevor Pittman's 15 first half points led the Bruins in the effort to get back into the game going into halftime after being down eight with less than a minute to go. A layup at the buzzer by Braxton Murray brought the Bruins back within three with a score of 58-55 going into halftime.

The second half began and the offenses picked up where they left off, but the Bruins were able to string several defensive stops and give themselves a double-digit lead. They held that lead for quite some time, but then they went ice cold. With the Bruins going five minutes without a point, the Eagles were able to claw themselves back into the game and even take the lead. After that run, the Bruins were down seven with three and a half minutes to go. Knowing they were desperate for several stops and buckets in a row, the Bruins turned up the defensive intensity and forced difficult shots for the Eagles. Big three-pointers were hit by Brandon Wilkins and Justin Skelton to bring the Bruins back. Then to end regulation, the Bruins went 6-6 from the free throw line to take the game into overtime tied 110-110.

Justin Skelton began the first overtime with a three-pointer in the opening seconds and established himself as the go-to guy for the Bruins in this period. His eight points led the Bruins and all came when the team needed it the most. After a couple good free throws by Brandon Wilkins and a layup by Braxton Murray, the Bruins were up four points with a minute and a half remaining, but it was not enough to win it in the period. The Eagles made two straight layups to tie it again and that forced a second overtime.

Knotted at 122, it came down to which team had the most gas left in the tank. That was the Bruins. Skelton began this period the same way he began the first overtime period: a triple. The game was tied with 3:05 remaining in double-overtime, and the Bruins flexed their muscles outlasting the Eagles. They were able to end the game on an 11-3 run. Wilkins knocked down two huge three-pointers, Pittman knocked down more clutch free throws, and Vander Hart put the game on ice with a dagger dunk. After two overtimes, the marathon game ended in a 139-131 Bruins victory.

Justin Skelton found his groove again and led the team with 36 points. Shad Vander Hart continues his memorable senior season with 32 points and 13 rebounds. Trevor Pittman continued his calming excellence scoring 26 points with 10 assists to go with it. Brandon Wilkins made big shots down the stretch and in overtime to tally 22 points. Finally, Braxton Murray was the guy inside for the Bruins scoring 21 points while shooting 10-13 on the night.

The Bruins get a day to prepare for Saturday's Senior Day game against Warren Wilson College. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
