After trailing the whole second half, the Bruins fight their way back into the game in the final minutes and claw out an important 92-91 victory against the Trinity College of Jacksonville Eagles.
"The execution and focus down the stretch won us that game," Head Coach Tony Miller said after the game. "So many guys made huge plays for us in the final couple of minutes."
The first half brought the back-and-forth offense that everyone expected to come out of this game. The Eagles took the lead with 10:34 left in the first half and held the lead almost the rest of the game. The Bruins kept it close and within reach, though, and the largest Eagles lead was 11 but the halftime score was 50-42. Vander Hart led the team with 16 first half points, but he was far from done.
To start the second half, the Bruins brought it back within four points but that seemed to be a deficit wall for the Bruins that they could not get over. Every time the Bruins brought it close, the Eagles answered right back. Great defense was played on both sides but the offenses performed better. The Bruins knocked down free throws in the second half which ended up being the difference. The team shot 16-18 in that second half with Braxton Murray and Brandon Wilkins making big ones down the stretch.
The Bruins found themselves down nine points with 1:38 remaining in the game, and all hope felt lost in the Davis Field House for the Bruins. The comeback began with season point leader Justin Skelton hitting a midrange jumper. Back down on offense after getting the first huge stop, Braxton Murray got a trip to the free-throw line where he knocked down both to get the Bruins deficit down to five with 49 seconds remaining. The Bruins then forced a travel on a great trap to get the ball back. On the in-bound play, Trevor Pittman knocked down the second three-pointer of the half for the Bruins to bring it back within two. With 30 seconds remaining, the Bruins forced another turnover and Shad Vander Hart put the Bruins ahead with an and-one layup! The Eagles had two chances at a game-winner but neither one of them fell and the Bruins prevailed with a huge 92-91 victory.
Each member of the starting five for the Bruins scored double digits today. Shad Vander Hart led the team with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Skelton scored his usual 20 followed by Brandon Wilkins with 15. Trevor Pittman scored 12 and Murray finished with 11.
"It was a total team effort today," said Coach Miller. "The big plays were spread around the floor, and the execution won us that game."
After the fifth straight region win, the Bruins now look to get two more next week in Florida. They face off against Baptist University of Florida for the first time in program history on Thursday with a 8:00 p.m. tipoff before playing against Pensacola Christian College on Saturday.
