Bruins Hot Bats Early Aren't Enough for Win Versus Truett McConnell

The Bruins started the game out strong from the plate and scored five early runs but that wasn't enough to overcome the Truett McConnell University Bears as they fall 12-6 on the road.

"We got off to a great start," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "We have to work on keeping zeros on the scoreboard after we score, though. Every time we scored, they answered especially when the defensive errors costs us late in the game."

In the top of the first inning, this game looked promising for the Bruins as they scored three runs to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Mannix Crawford started the game with a leadoff double down the third base line. Evan Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt, and on the erroneous throw, Crawford scored and Johnson advanced. to second. Henry Rumble followed that with an RBI-double followed by an RBI-single by Zac Tyre.

The Bears bit back, though, scoring 5 runs across the first two innings. Now down 5-3, the Bruins looked to answer in the top of the third. Evan Johnson was hit by a pitch to begin the inning followed by a Henry Rumble walk. Now with two runners on, Jacob Highsmith smacked a two RBI-double to tie it back at 5-5.

The Bears answered back again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game stayed within reach until a couple errors helped give the Bears four more runs in the seventh to make the score 12-5. The Bruins got one more in the top of the eighth on an RBI-fielder's choice hit by Preston Cox, but that was it. The final score was 12-6.

Sterling Jones started on the mound for the Bruins and went two innings allowed six innings but only two earned runs. Ryan Pierce pitched in relief for four and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs, five earned. David Henry ended the game with a scoreless inning and a third.

Offensively, Mannix Crawford led the Bruins with two hits. Jacob Highsmith had two RBIs to lead the team. Johnson, Rumble, Tyre, and Cox all had one RBI each.

The Bruins now look forward to a midweek series on the road against Morris College starting tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
