Bruins Lose on Walkoff After a Hornets Comeback

The Bruins lose another frustrating game to the Morris College Hornets 10-9 to wrap up the three-game midweek series.

The game started with a couple scoreless innings, which was kind of to be expected with the pitchers on the mound for each team. Bruins ace Tillman Padgett started and threw six good innings allowing two runs on three hits. The Bruins were able to crack the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning. It was Mannix Crawford staying hot who brought the first runs in on a two RBI-single. He advanced to second base on the throw and later scored. The Bruins led 3-0 at the end of the third inning.

The Hornets were able to get a run back in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it a 3-2 game. Everything got a little crazy in the seventh inning where both teams put runs on the board and the Bruins looked to seal the game. Henry Rumble began the inning getting hit by the pitch and advanced to third base after a steal and ground-out. Cody Kirkpatrick hit him in to extend the lead to 4-2. Preston Cox reached on a fielder's choice and then scored from first on an RBI-double from David Henry. Gabe Gearhart and Elijah Medrano both drew walks to load the bases. Crawford was then walked to score a run making it 6-2 before Evan Johnson clears the bases with a three RBI-double! He attempted to extend his double to a triple but was thrown out. The runs counted regardless and the Bruins had a 9-2 lead. The Hornets were able to answer back with three runs aided by a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, but the Bruins still had control.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bruins only needed three outs to win, and they held a 9-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, the first two batters get on base for the Hornets. They moved up to second and third on a bad throw before a single scored them both. Now 9-7, the Bruins lead is smaller and pressure is mounting. The very next batter came to the plate and smacked a two-run home run to tie the game 9-9. After a few walks, the bases were loaded, and the Bruins still had no outs. The game ended when the runner was called safe at home despite the throw getting there in time. The final score was 10-9.

It was a frustrating week for the Bruins, but now they will look to bounce back against NCCAA opponent Alice Lloyd College next Tuesday, March 31 as they will face off in a doubleheader in Pippas Passes, Kentucky. Game one will begin at 1:00 p.m.
