From their home court at the Davis Field House, the Bob Jones University Bruins picked up back-to-back 3-0 wins against NCCAA South Region opponent Trinity College of Jacksonville. With today's wins, the Bruins have improved to 5-9 overall this season and 3-2 in conference play.
Today was originally scheduled to be a tri-match featuring Trinity College of Jacksonville and Paine College, but due to unforeseen circumstances, Paine College was unable to travel and the Bruins and Eagles played two matches instead.
As game one got underway, Sophia Mukenschnabl started to scoring with an ace to kick off an 8-0 run. The Bruins quickly advanced to a ten point advantage, leading 16-6 over the Eagles. After the Eagles recorded a kill, the Bruins tallied the final nine points of the set to win the opening frame 25-7.
In the second set, the Eagles worked to keep in close through the opening points. They soon pulled to a slight lead over Bob Jones. The Bruins regrouped and went on an 11-1 run to pull ahead 18-11 over TCJ. The Eagles worked to come back and keep it close, but a kill from Stefanie Burke secured the set two win 25-19.
It was another quick start for the Bruins in the third frame as they went on a 13-1 run highlighted by four aces to lead 16-4. The scoring continued to go in favor of the Bruins as they wrapped up the game with a 25-7 set three win.
After a brief break, the two teams were back on the court for their second meeting of the day.
The Bruins scored the first four to open game two before a service error gave TCJ their first point of the contest. The lead held for Bob Jones through most of the match as they were the first team to reach the 20 point mark. The Eagles didn't back down and soon tallied five straight to cut the deficit to just one point at 20-19. The final few points went in favor of the Bruins as they closed out the first set 25-20.
The two programs exchanged points to open the second set before the Bruins went on a scoring run. Several timely kills pulled the Bruins on top 25-13 to get the opening set win.
TCJ took the first few points of the third set. While the Bruins and Eagles kept the score close, the Eagles kept the lead until a kill by Blakely Brow put the Bruins ahead 12-11. The score flip flopped twice more before the Bruins went on an 8-2 scoring run to close out the contest 25-20 to complete their second sweep of the day.
"We were excited to come away from the day with two region wins," said head coach Anthony Bennett following today's games. "Our implementation of everything we worked on in practice this week was put on display, so we were super happy to see the progress from the team. We're going to enjoy the restful evening and rest of the weekend, then come back ready to work hard at practice on Monday!"
The Bruins are back home on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest against Warren Wilson as they look to expand on their three game winning streak.
