The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team battled for five sets to earn a 3-2 victory over NCCAA South Region opponent the University of Toccoa Falls. With today's result, the Bruins have extended their win streak to five games as they sit at 7-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
As today's game got underway in Toccoa Falls, Georgia, the Bruins and Screaming Eagles went back and forth exchanging points early before the Bruins pulled ahead to a 12-7 advantage. The lead held until Toccoa Falls began chipping away and cut the deficit to just one point at 17-16. The Bruins once again pulled ahead, but the Screaming Eagles didn't back down, and with the score knotted 23-23 came back to take the final two points and overtake the Bruins for the opening set decision.
It was another close start to begin the second set. The Bruins pulled ahead to a slight lead before the Screaming Eagles tied the game. This happened two more times before Bob Jones came together to close out the set on top 25-22 to even the match.
Toccoa Falls began the third set on top of the scoreboard, and they didn't give up their lead through the frame. Late in the set, the Bruins battled to try and mount a comeback, but in the end, the Screaming Eagles took the match lead with the 24-19 set win.
The Bruins responded in the fourth with a dominant performance. They soon advanced to a five, six, seven, and eventually ten point advantage over their region rivals. They continued to play well to finish on top 25-14 to force a fifth set.
The final frame started with the two teams swapping points. Toccoa held a one point lead before the Bruins took over 10-9. They scored three more to move to a 13-9 lead. But the Screaming Eagles didn't back down. With the match point on the line at 14-11, the Screaming Eagles came back to tie it at 14 all. The final two points went to Bob Jones as they took the region win 3-2.
"We were very excited to come away with a win tonight in a big region match," shared head coach Anthony Bennett. "Every single set was a hard fought battle by both teams, and we were able to put it away at the end with a few big plays. Huge credit to Toccoa Falls for their resiliency and overall grit. We look forward to playing them again a couple more times this season. We enjoyed the high level of competition and were super pleased to come away with a win. Excited to get back on the court tomorrow for an exciting home match!"
Tomorrow, the Bruins are back in action on Friday as they welcome Alice Lloyd College to the Davis Field House at 7 p.m.
