The winning ways continue for the Bob Jones University volleyball team as the Bruins battled through five sets to finish on top 3-2 over Alice Lloyd College Friday evening in the Davis Field House. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 8-9 on the season.
As Friday's contest got underway, the Alice Lloyd College Eagles got on the board first before the Bruins put together a scoring run to move ahead 7-3. The Bruins continued to hold on to their lead and cruised through the opening set with a 25-18 win to take the early match lead.
After some early back and forth in the second set, the Eagles pushed to an early double digit lead. While the Bruins worked to close the gap, it was too much to overcome as the Eagles knotted the score 1-1 with a 25-17 set win.
The two teams exchanged points early in the third frame before Stefanie Burke pulled the Bruins ahead with several timely kills and service aces. The team continued to work together and worked to extend their lead, but the Eagles didn't back down and soon pulled within one at 21-20. The Bruins came out of a timeout and finished the set 25-21 to take the match lead 2-1.
The fourth set was one of runs, with each team putting together several scoring sprees. In the end, it was the Eagles who pushed through to take the set 25-16 to force a fifth.
As the final set got underway, the Bruins put the first three points on the board. After the Eagles evened the score 4-4, the Bruins came back to regain the lead. The advantage held through the remainder of the match, and an ace by Lyndsey Cassell sealed the five set win for the Bruins 15-11.
Alyssa Goebert finished the contest with 15 kills, with teammate Lyndsey Cassell right behind with 14.
"Tonight's match felt really special for our group! We had so much support from the crowd, and we had so much support from within no matter what circumstance we were in," shared head coach Anthony Bennett. "Coming away with victories in back to back nights of five set matches against two top-10 opponents speaks so highly to this group's resilience. We are so proud of how they showed up to work tonight against a very skilled opponent!"
The Bruins are back in the Davis Field House on Thursday, October 1 as they host Paine College in the Davis Field House.
