The Bruins basketball team came out on Saturday afternoon for a matchup with the Florida College Falcons. The Bruins were looking to rebound after a tough loss against Trinity Baptist College on Friday night. This was the second day of the Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida. The team was in for a tough match as the Falcons posted a large front court and speedy guards.
From the opening tip, the Bruins struggled to maintain possession as the team continued to turn the ball over. The Falcons capitalized on the Bruins offensive lapses and continued to stretch their lead. Overall the Bruins committed 20 turnovers throughout the first half. "We put ourselves in a hole," Coach Ring said. "We're still making bad decisions in transition, but that will come."
At the half, the Bruins were down 43-27. In the locker room, Coach Ring rallied his team by speaking to the hard work and dedication that the men have put in to get to this point. "I told them I wasn't seeing that attitude of dedication and hard work like we had all throughout our preseason," Coach Ring said. “We just weren’t playing like I knew we were capable of.”
In the 2nd half, the Bruins came out as a completely different team and began to cut into the Falcons lead. The team made better decisions on the offensive end, and the defense began to hold the Falcons. The Bruins dominated the boards throughout the second half as they out rebounded the Falcons 34-17.
In the waning moments of the game, the Bruins looked to take the lead but the Falcons were able to make key shots down the stretch to come away with a 72-68 victory over the Bruins.
"We played much better in the second half," Coach Ring said. "We played hard, and even though we lost it was good to see us comeback like we did. Our half-court defense was really playing well and we controlled the boards."
The Bruins outscored the Falcons 41-29 in the 2nd half, as four different players scored in double figures for the Bruins. Despite the loss, the coaching staff felt good about the way the team finished the game.
The Bruins will have time to rest and recover before heading to Westpoint, Georgia next week for another tournament on Friday and Saturday.
