Box Score
The Bruins entered their match on Friday night having not allowed a goal in their last two games. The team looked to continue their stellar defensive play as they traveled to Tennessee for a matchup with the Hiwassee College Tigers. Both the Bruins and Tigers are in their first year of intercollegiate soccer competition. Coach McCormick’s squad was primed and ready to put their record above .500 as the team entered Friday’s match at 4-4-0.
From the outset, the Bruins continued to display the defensive prowess as the Bruins went right at the Tigers. The Bruins also continued to improve on possession and control as the team was able to really control the pace of the game. That poise and control allowed for numerous opportunities for the Bruins to get open shots on goal. As the game progressed, the Bruins would become stronger and stronger as the team began to notch goal after goal. Stephen Lovelace would lead the way for the Bruins with two goals, while Ryan McCarty, Tommy Sims, Phil Beardslee and Travis Woodham, all scored as well for the Bruins in a 6-0 rout of the Tigers.
The Bruins would not allow a shot on goal the entire game as the team maintained excellent ball control throughout the match and played great defense. When the dust settled from the match, the Bruins had extended their winning streak to three games and had completed their third straight shutout.
“We were able to move the ball well,” Coach Jesse McCormick said. “Our team played solid defense and we really came out focused.”
With the win, the Bruins now move to 5-4-0 on the year and have looked incredibly strong throughout the last three matches. With each passing game, the Bruins continue to improve in teamwork and relying on spacing and ball movement to be able to create open opportunities for goals. The Bruins will relish in this victory as the team has not allowed an opponent to score in the last 270 minutes of play.
“We have had more time playing together which helps,” Coach McCormick said. “Our communication is getting better and better with each game.”
The Bruins will have the week off before welcoming this same Hiwassee College Tigers team to Greenville next Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
