The BJU Bruins looked to right their ship in this inaugural basketball season as they took on the Reinhardt University Eagles on Saturday evening. The Bruins have had a tough stretch as of late losing 3 straight games, with the most recent coming in a 93-57 blowout against Point University. The team has been adjusting to the speed and physicality of playing at the intercollegiate level. As they prepared for a matchup with the Eagles, the Bruins knew they were going to be facing a difficult opponent. The Eagles posted a 18-12 record last season, and had several starters returning on this year’s squad.
From the opening tip, the game took on a physical toll as the Eagles were able to generate open shots and work into great position to score. The Bruins countered with good play from their guards and forwards. As the half was winding down, the Bruins began to be plagued again by turnovers as the team had several costly turnovers in the waning minutes of the first half.
“We did some things better today,” Coach Ring said. “We still have to improve but we are getting better.”
As the second half began, the Eagles used the size and speed of their team to dominate the paint and create wide open shot opportunities. With the Bruins offense struggling, the Eagles went in for the kill and increased their lead. The Bruins continued to turn the ball over in the second half, and try as they might, they were not able to cut into the lead.
As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins were on the losing end of a 76-61 game. With the loss, the team has now dropped four straight and will be looking to improve as they travel to Emmanuel College next Thursday night for a matchup with the Lions.
