The Bruins were riding high after a 3-0 shutout of Toccoa Falls on Tuesday night. Coming into Friday's match against the Columbia International University Rams, the Bruins were looking to continue their strong play. Over 2,000 fans packed out Alumni stadium for the match between two first-year programs. The Rams were 4-3-1 entering the match while the Bruins were 3-4-0.
From the outset, the Bruins continued to show their improvement in crisp passing and great ball control. The Bruins began to make several runs through the Rams defense, but several times the team was called back for offsides. The Bruins were able to make great penetration into the box and worked well in creating space for open shots. The team would eventually break the scoreless tie late in the first half as
Travis Woodham received an excellent through pass from Matt Moore, maneuvered around the goalie on the break, and scored to make it 1-0 Bruins at the break.
The Bruins put up impressive offensive numbers in the first half as the team was able to generate 14 shots, and controlled the possession throughout the first half.
With the team in the driver’s seat, the Bruins came out in the second half and picked up the offensive pressure as the team continued to show great control of the game. Pass after pass was executed with great precision, allowing the Bruins several wide open attempts on goal. The Bruins would notch their second goal of the night as
Ryan McCarty fed a beautiful pass inside to Matt Moore who scored easily on goal making it 2-0 Bruins. From there the team never looked back as Ryan McCarty would score two goals in the
57th and
79th minute to give the Bruins a 4-0 victory at home.
"We continue to take steps forward every game," Coach Jesse McCormick said. “I feel like we really stepped it up the second half as a team.” McCormick is continuing to see growth in his players and credits that to the coaching staff who are helping to develop the team. “Jon Grant has done a great job with the offense and Craig Seelig has been a big help with the keepers,” Coach McCormick said. “We are creating more quality opportunities as a team offensively, and Jon Sandy did a great job in goal tonight.” Sandy completed the shutout making several key saves on the night for his second clean sheet of the season.
The team will look to continue their shutout streak as the Bruins have gone 180 minutes without allowing a goal. With the win, the Bruins now move back to .500 on the year and will have some time of rest before traveling to Tennessee next Friday night for a matchup with Hiwassee College.
