Box Score
The Bruins were on the road on Tuesday night as they faced the Southern Wesleyan Warriors. The two teams squared off in December, with the Warriors getting the upper hand in a 78-64 win. The Bruins were coming off a tough loss at home to Tennessee Temple and the team was looking to get back on track. Southern Wesleyan was coming off back to back losses and the team had lost three of their last four.
As the game began, the Bruins and Warriors traded baskets and turnovers in the opening minutes. Eventually, the Warriors began to push the tempo and build a lead against the Bruins. Offensively, the Bruins countered with the stellar play of Kyle Turner who scored 12 first half points. Despite the good shooting by Turner, the Bruins struggled to keep pace with the high-tempo running offense of the Warriors. The Bruins committed several turnovers and gave up a lot of second chance opportunities. "Southern Wesleyan played really well tonight, but we didn't make it hard on them," Coach Ring said. "They really pushed us on defense and we couldn't make a shot to save our lives." The Warriors pushed the tempo and shot 45% from the three point line to build a large lead over the Bruins. As the half ended, the Bruins were down 44-26.
"We gave up too many second chance points," Coach Ring said. "Really it came down to a lack of focus in giving them points that could have been stopped."
As the second half began, the Bruins made every effort to get back into the game as Darnel Antoine and Josh Clater tried to claw the Bruins back into the game. Each time the Bruins would cut into the lead, Kenny Joyner (20 points) and Rochard Gibson (17 points) would knock down shots to take the lead right back. With the game in hand, the Warriors loosened up a bit on the defensive side, allowing the Bruins to make several small runs to try to get back in the game. The Warriors showed their physical style as the team outrebounded the Bruins 45-26. The Warriors got 27 points from their bench players and shot 50% from the field for the game. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had been handed their third straight loss 86-55.
"We just have to get our head right," Coach Ring said. "This is a tough week for us and it is not the time for us to be losing focus. We are going to work on that a lot this week to make sure we are ready to play every night."
Kyle Turner led the Bruins with 18 points while Josh Clater added 12. Darnel Antoine chipped in 11 for the Bruins who shot 36% on the night while committing 22 turnovers. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-21 on the season and will be on the road on Friday night again as they face Pensacola.
