The Bruins hosted their home opener on Thursday night as they welcomed the Knights from St. Andrews University. The Bruins were coming off a hard-fought loss against Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday night. The Knights came into the match at 0-2 after suffering back to back losses from Southern Wesleyan and Webber International. The Bruin faithful were in full voice as more than 1,800 fans filled Alumni Stadium.
From the opening kickoff, the Knights went on the offensive and showed their speed and offensive pressure on Joseph Wooster and the Bruin defense. The team had their hands full with the speedy front line of the Knights. Despite several open looks, the Bruin defense stood strong. Joseph Wooster was rock solid again in net for the Bruins as the game remained scoreless early. As the first half wore on, the Knights continued to pressure the net and create scoring opportunities. In the 26th minute, Knights' forward Caio Liberatti bent a beautiful shot over the outstretched arms of Wooster to put St. Andrews up 1-0.
"We knew this was going to be a quality team we were playing tonight," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We needed to do a better job of not diving in the middle and giving them open looks. Just small little mistakes and giving guys a little too much room cost us."
In the second half, the Bruins took possession and had several opportunities on net. The team desperately looked for the equalizer while still playing good defense. In the 53rd minute, Caio Liberatti would strike again as he buried a low shot past Wooster to put the Knights up 2-0. The Bruins regrouped and looked to get back into the game. Cody Lehman provided the spark for the Bruins as he scored the first goal of the season with a finish off a beautiful pass from Vincent Wilson. "We finally were able to possess in the midfield," Lehman said. "Thankfully Matt (Moore) let it go and it came right to me and I was able to get a good shot off."
With the goal, the Bruins offense was rejuvenated and the team sought for another goal. The Knights began to stall and try to hold the Bruins at bay. With several opportunities sailing just wide, the Bruins rally fell just short as the Knights came away with a 2-1 victory.
"Overall we just have to finish the opportunities we create," Coach McCormick said. "We had some quality chances that we didn't put in the back of the net. Our communication needs to improve offensively and we will continue to grow as a team and get used to playing with the players we have."
The next match for the Bruins will be on Tuesday night as the team hosts Piedmont College at 5 p.m.
