McCarty's goal completes a come from behind win over Tennessee Temple University

Box Score
The Bob Jones University Bruins weren't interested in playing overtime. Instead, Bruins captain Ryan McCarty scored a goal with 3.8 seconds remaining to give the team a 2-1 victory over the Tennessee Temple University Crusaders on Friday night.

"All I remember is the ball going straight up into the air and knowing I have to win that header and put it back in the middle," McCarty said. "Then it went off the defender next to me and was just sitting there waiting to be kicked and I kicked it. I really didn't have time to think which is good because I probably would have put it over the net. It was crazy, but it was fun."

Bruins celebrate McCarty last-second goal in the
team's 2-1 victory over Tennessee Temple University
The last second goal won the game for the Bruins as they move to 5-6 on the season with their second straight win. The team welcomed Tennessee Temple University who was riding a 3-game losing streak entering Friday's match.

In the opening minutes, the Bruins and Crusaders exchanged possession with both teams getting excellent chances to score. The Bruins nearly struck first as a cross pass found the feet of Eric Moisant who missed on a wide open frame. The Bruins had several more chances throughout the remaining minutes of the half, but couldn't capitalize as the two teams were locked in a 0-0 match.

"We have to come out with that intensity and spark right from the beginning of the match," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "It looked like we were trying to do that but it wasn't quite clicking for us."

In the second half, both teams charged the net to try to score first. In the 58th minute, the Crusaders capitalized on a defensive lapse as Gerardo Mondragon bent a low shot into the net to give the Crusaders the lead. The Bruins regrouped and looked to attack. The team was able to pass well throughout the match, and kept knocking on the door with golden opportunities to score.

Finally in the 71st minute, Travis Woodham scored his first goal of the season with a lofting shot to equalize the game at 1-1. With the game even, the two teams looked for the upper hand. The Bruins defense stood strong and goalie Joseph Wooster was able to make several key saves in the second half to help keep the match even.

With less than a minute to play, both teams were beginning to think about the prospect of overtime. Just then, Ryan Beadles sent a cross-field pass to Eric Moisant who bent a cross back into the middle. The pass was cleared straight up into the air by the Crusader defense. Ryan McCarty fought for possession and buried the shot in the back of the net to make it 2-1 with 3.8 seconds remaining. The final buzzer handed the Bruins a 2-1 victory over Tennessee Temple University.

"Having both of our captains step up for us in the second half with goals really helped us," Coach McCormick said. "I felt like we showed that spark we needed in the second half. I saw some fight and I saw some urgency in the second half and those are some good things to take away."

With the win, the Bruins improve to 5-6 on the season. McCarty scored his team-leading 5th goal of the season while Travis Woodham scored his first. Jared Simmons was credit with the assist as the Bruins outshot TTU 12-10.

Next up, the Bruins will travel to Waleska, Georgia on Saturday afternoon for a matchup with Reinhardt University.
