The Bruins closed out their 2014-15 preseason strong with a 90-58 win over Greenville Technical College. "It took us a while to get rolling but when we settled down we were able to create open shots with our flow and our guys knocked down shots," Coach Neal Ring said.
The team was coming off a 72-69 win over USC Salkehatchie on Thursday night despite committing 19 turnovers. The Bruins were looking to build on their first scrimmage performance as they welcomed the Greenville Technical College Hornets to the Davis Field House.
From the opening tip, the Bruins used good transition play to jump out to an early lead. After a Cooper George three-point shot, the Bruins climbed to a 18-7 advantage. The team played well on defense and forced the Hornets into tough scoring opportunities. On offense, the Bruins continued to pass to the open man for buckets but the team struggled some with turnovers. The Bruins used an 11-3 run to close out the half 37-17.
"We have to make college passes and not high school passes," Coach Ring said. "That being said, we had a great opportunity tonight to work against a zone and our guys were able to get open looks and score."
In the second half, the impressive shooting performance of the Bruins continued as the team shot 53% from the field throughout the game. Bruins' guard Dustin Killough carried the Bruins by driving to the basket for points and shooting 63% from the field. At the midway point of the half, the Hornets desperately tried to climb back into the game but the Bruins defense stood strong.Â
After a basket by Dustin Killough, the Bruins led the Hornets 75-53. From there, the Bruins continued to work through their offensive sets to keep the lead. The final buzzer handed the Bruins another preseason victory with a decisive 90-58 win over Greenville Technical College.Â
"We were better tonight defensively," Coach Ring said. "Overall we were doing what we have been emphasizing and we'll try to build on that moving forward into the season."Â
With the win, the Bruins finish their preseason by winning both games. Dustin Killough was one of five Bruins in double figures as he led the way for the Bruins with 24 points. Kyle Turner added 17 points and 9 rebounds and Noah Smith added 12 points and 7 boards. The team will continue preparations for the season-opener on Saturday afternoon as the Bruins welcome Crown College to the Davis Field House. Bruins Game StatsÂ
