the Bruins 87-81 win over CIUThe Bruins and Rams met twice in the 2013 season with the Bruins capturing wins in both games. The Bruins were coming off a loss to Milligan College and entered Tuesday's game with a 1-2 record. The Rams started off the 2014-15 season with back to back road losses but were looking to get their first win as they welcomed the Bruins to Moore Fitness Stadium.
In the opening minutes, both teams went back and forth exchanging baskets with neither able to establish control. The Bruins did an excellent job of getting into the lane to get to the free throw line. CIU countered on the offensive end by shooting 76% throughout the first half including five three pointers. The Rams were able to extend their lead to 37-23 the Bruins began to chip their way back into the game as freshman Marshall Riddle was able to get to the lane to score. Each time the Bruins made a run, the Rams would counter to keep the lead. As the buzzer sounded to end the half, the Rams clung to a 50-39 lead.
"We were trading 2 for 3 in the first half," Coach Ring said. "We did a great job attacking the rim but CIU did a great job of knocking down shots.We were determined to play better defensively in the 2nd half."
In the second half, the halftime adjustments proved to be effective for the Bruins as the team started out on an 8-0 run to climb back into the game. Team captain Ray Holden carried the team on his back in the second half as he drove through the lane to get through the foul line. After a three-point dagger by Marshall Riddle, the Bruins captured the lead 70-68. From there, the team worked hard for second chance points and took advantage of 17 Rams turnovers to extend their lead. The Bruins iced their victory with clutch shooting down the stretch to come away with an 87-81 victory on the road.
"It was a good team effort tonight," Coach Ring said. "If we play with defensive intensity we can stay in every game. Our guys got some good experience against a very tough team. This win should help us going forward as we prepare for our games coming up."
Four Bruins players reached double figures but Marshall Riddle led the way for the team with 24 points. Kyle Turner recorded a double-double on the night with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dustin Killough added 14 points and Ray Holden scored 13. The Bruins converted 26 points off of turnovers and the team was able to shoot 73% from the line on 33 attempts.
With the win, the Bruins climb back to .500 on the season at 2-2. Next up, the Bruins will host three teams in the Century BMW Bruin Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Bruins will welcome Johnson University on Friday night.
