Bruins Drop Second Straight 74-64

Team loses to Warren Wilson College on the road

Box Score
The Bruins were on the road on Monday night as they traveled to compete against the Warren Wilson College Owls. This was a makeup game from the snow storm which cancelled the matchup between these two teams last week. The Bruins were coming off an emotional 74-73 loss on Friday night to Clearwater. Still, the team has won two of its last three games. The Owls came into Monday's game with a 12-10 record and were in the midst of a three-game winning streak. The DeVries Athletic Center is always a factor for the Owls, and the Bruins were hoping to steal one on the road.

From the opening tip, the Owls and Bruins exchanged leads in the opening minutes. Eventually the Owls would build a double digit lead at the midway point of the first half. They were able to take advantage of the man-to-man defense by the Bruins, which wasn't able to provide help through screens opening up shooting opportunities for the Owls. The team switched into a zone defense which slowed the Owls. The Bruins then went on a 12-0 run to close the half and tie the score at 33-33.

"We had several empty possessions tonight in which we took bad shots or turned the ball over," Coach Ring said. "Against a team that shoots the ball as well as they do you can't do that. We were glad to be where we were at for halftime."

The Owls came out strong with an 8-0 run to gain the lead against the Bruins in the second half. The Owls began to figure out the Bruins zone defense and worked the ball around for open looks. Despite the offensive production by Warren Wilson, Kyle Turner and Larry Taylor kept chipping away at the Owls lead. Each time the Bruins would get close, the Owls would take advantage of a few Bruin mistakes to extend the lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins were handed their second straight loss 74-64.

"We need to get better collectively as a team on defense," Coach Ring said. "We weren't sharp tonight and since they play really well at home. We weren't able to match their intensity. Our offense needs to be able to find a flow and work together more. We have another tough one tomorrow so it doesn't get any easier from here."

Larry Taylor led the Bruins with 23 points and Kyle Turner added 18. The team was outrebounded 43-24 against the Owls and committed 13 turnovers while allowing Warren Wilson to shoot 50% from three-point range. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 10-13 on the season. The team will have little time to prepare for their next game as they welcome in Southern Wesleyan University tomorrow night to Greenville.
