The Bruins women's basketball team was in Asheville on Thursday night as they took the court against the Warren Wilson College Owls. The two teams were originally scheduled to play last week before a snow storm showered most of the Southeast and cancelled the game. The Bruins were coming off a tough 72-63 loss at home to Southern Wesleyan on Tuesday night. The team has been hampered by injury and has lost two of their last three games while posting a 16-7 record. The Owls were riding a 4-game winning streak entering Thursday's game and were 15-7 on the season. The Bruins looked to bounce back and cool off the red-hot Owls.
From the opening tip, the two teams went back and forth trading baskets and the lead. The Bruins were able to spread the floor and allow Kourtney Hoelfer and company to establish position in the post and force several fouls. Chalice Pack and Maggie Ford provided solid guard play off the bench as the two teams remained close. At the half, the Bruins clung to a slim 35-30 lead.
"We did a good job of running the floor and drawing fouls," Coach LeViere said.
In the second half, the Bruins were able to maintain their lead by playing smart on each possession. The lead reached 8 points before the Owls came charging back to eventually pull ahead by three with just over four minutes to go. The Bruins battled back to force the game in overtime.
In the overtime period, the Bruins used their post-play and clutch free throw shooting to gain the advantage. When the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins came away with an impressive 70-67 overtime road win.
"Really proud of our team tonight," Coach LeViere said. "They played aggressive and smart through some adversity this game."
With the win, the Bruins improve to 17-7 on the season and will have the weekend off before welcoming in Tennessee Temple on Tuesday night.
