The Bob Jones University Bruins soccer team was anxious to get some real time action against another squad. What they got was a tough match against the Bryan College Lions ending in a 3-0 loss in their first scrimmage of the 2014 season. "It was a good wake up call for our guys," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We know we have a lot of work to do before our next match on Friday."
From the opening kickoff, the Bruins possessed well, but the team allowed too much space in the midfield as the Lions were able to slice their way up the field to generate shots. Lions seniors Daniel Branley (9) and Gustavo Angel Tamayo helped to propel a powerful offensive flow that barraged Philip Gibble most of the night with shots. In the 25th minute, the Lions finally found the hole in the Bruins defensive wall as Bryan College took a 1-0 advantage. Ten minutes later, the Lions struck again to take a 2-0 advantage into the half.
"We let too much go through their midfielder (Tamayo)," Coach McCormick said. "Hard to narrow down what went wrong tonight."
In the second half, the Bruins continued to struggle in moving the ball into the attacking third. The chemistry of the team was just not present as the team gave up their third goal in the 60th minute. The Lions continued to control pace and play as the Bruins struggled to generate anything offensively. The final whistle handed the Lions a decisive 3-0 victory over BJU.
The Bruins will get back to work in practice over the next few days before welcoming the North Greenville University Crusaders to Alumni Stadium on
Friday night.
