Box Score After scoring two goals in the first 5 minutes of the game, the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish went on to score four more goals in the first half to run away with the game in a 7-0 victory over the Bob Jones University Bruins on Monday night. "We let them take advantage of the opportunities they had," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We gave them too many easy chances and we didn't do what we needed to do on the offensive end."
With the loss, the Bruins dropped
to 0-3 in conference play this season. The Bruins entered Monday's match on a two-game winning streak with victories over Montreat College and Toccoa Falls College. The Sailfish entered the match with a three-game winning streak in which they had outscored their opponents 9-1 in those three games.
From the opening kickoff, the speed of play by the Sailfish was too much for the Bruins to overcome. In the 3rd minute of play, Sailfish midfielder Eddy Milien sent a beautiful through pass behind the Bruins defense which was finished by Cameron Roberts for the goal. Less than two minutes later, the Sailfish benefited from an own-goal scored by the Bruins off a header on a corner kick to make it 2-0.
The more the half wore on, the more confident the Sailfish played as they barraged Joseph Wooster with 11 shots on goal in the 1st half. When the halftime buzzer sounded, the Bruins found themselves with much ground to cover down 6-0.
"We were a bit sloppy to start and some of our poor passing early on didn't help with our confidence," Coach McCormick said.
In the second half, the Bruins play improved as they continued to push their way up the field. Andrew Moisant had a golden opportunity on a shot just outside the box, but Sailfish goalie Fernando Cortes made a diving save to keep the Bruins scoreless. With time winding down, Joshua Page bent a beautiful shot off the post to cap the stellar night by PBA as the Sailfish defeated the Bruins 7-0.
"The game of soccer is a great game as you can play great teams," Coach McCormick said. "If you do the details well and limit their chances you can come back and put goals in the net and create opportunities to win games. The guys are ready to learn from this match but also move on from this match as we are ready for the rematch with Clearwater on Friday.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 2-4 on the season. Next up, the team will have a chance for revenge as they welcome Clearwater Christian University on Friday night. The Bruins fell to Clearwater 1-0 a few weeks ago.
