Box Score The Bob Jones University Bruins used a pair of goals in the second half by John Wilson to fuel a 4-1 rout of the Clearwater Christian College Cougars on Friday night.
"Home field is a huge advantage that helps us a lot," Coach McCormick said. "Obviously as a coach we should be playing the same regardless of where we play but it was great to have the crowd out as they were a big support for us."
John Wilson's 2nd half heroics helped propel the Bruins
to a 4-1 victory over Clearwater Christian College. The Bruins avenged their loss earlier this season as the Cougars came away with a 1-0 victory in Clearwater, Florida. The rivalry is entering its 3rd year with the Bruins and Cougars both winning two games each as the series is even at 2-2. In all previous matchups, the home team has come away with a clean sheet victory. The Bruins looked to have history repeat itself as they took the field in front of over 2,500 fans at Alumni Stadium.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins looked to establish possession and fed off the energy of the crowd. An early chance from AJ Redlinger nearly put the Bruins on the board as Redlinger received a pass from McCarty and fired a shot that was saved by Cougars goalkeeper Drew Nilius.
The team continued to pressure the net with shots until a broken play yielded a goal for the Bruins in the 25th minute. Ryan McCarty chased down a pass and got tangled up with a Cougars defender. Suddenly, McCarty found himself all alone in front of the net and
finished the play to make it 1-0 Bruins.BJU continued to move the ball into the attacking third as the combination play of Moisant, McCarty, Redlinger and Wilson carved its way up the field to generate open looks.
With less than a minute to play in the half, the Bruins struck again as a rebound shot fell to the feet of
Andrew Moisant who buried the shot to make it 2-0 at the half. "We had a number of different things working well for us tonight," Coach McCormick said. "AJ did a great job of setting guys up and really wearing out their defense."
In the second half, the Bruins continued to keep the pressure on as the team worked into the attacking lanes for shots. In the 51st minute, AJ Redlinger dropped a pass to John
Wilson who blasted a low shot into the net to extend the Bruins lead to 3-0.
Wilson would score again in the 69th minute to further grow the Bruins lead.
The Cougars refused to give up and notched a goal in the 82nd minute, but it was too little too late as the Bruins held on for the 4-1 victory. "Last time we played them we weren't sharp," Coach McCormick said. "Defensively we needed to step up and win balls and we did a much better job of that tonight. We need to make better decisions in the back with the ball. I don't know if it was fatigue but we weren't as sharp at the end so we just need to be sure we are out there for the full 90 minutes."
With the win, the Bruins climb to 3-4 on the season. The Bruins outshot CCC 11-2 in the match. The team finished up their four-game home stand 3-1. The Bruins will play their next three matches on the road starting on Tuesday night as the team will battle Truett-McConnell College.
