Warriors End Bruins Season 5-2

Team allows early lead and can't recover in loss to Southern Wesleyan University

Box Score
Despite rallying to cut the lead to one in the 2nd half, the Bruins deficit was too much to overcome as the Southern Wesleyan University Warriors defeated Bob Jones University 5-2 in the semi-final round of the NCCAA DI South Regional Playoff.

"We just needed a little more on offense," Coach McCormick said. "Defensively they had a couple of great finishes but we also made some mistakes."

The Bruins entered the regional playoff with the #3 seed in the region and SWU was seeded at #2. The Bruins and Warriors had met earlier in the 2015 season, with the Warriors winning 1-0 in Central, South Carolina. Rainy weather on Wednesday made the pitch very soggy as both teams took the field with a trip to the region championship on the line.

As the match began, the Bruins and Warriors looked to test the pitch as both teams traded possession in the early stages of the game. The Bruins had trouble keeping possession but the defense did a good job of turning away Warrior opportunities. In the 24th minute of play, Bruins' keeper Philip Gibble mishandled the ball leaving a wide open net and the Warriors capitalized making it 1-0.

The Warriors took advantage of another defensive lapse as the team went up 2-0 with 18 minutes to go in the half. Things went from bad to worse in the 16th minute as a brilliant strike by SWU made it 3-0 with just minutes to play in the first half. With minutes remaining, Derek Doran slid a through ball to Stephen Grider who finished the play to put the Bruins on the board as the first half ended with the Bruins trailing 3-1.

In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to get back into the game. The Bruins possessed well and were able to work the ball into the attacking third for opportunities to score. Each shot sailed just wide as the Bruins were running out of time. In the 62nd minute of play, the team got a spark as a centering pass found the head of Ryan McCarty as the team cut the lead back to one 3-2. The recharged Bruins were now just one goal away from the equalizer.

The Warriors quickly silenced the Bruins momentum as a well struck goal gave SWU a 4-2 lead. The team added another goal just minutes later to increase the lead to 5-2. The Bruins tried to rally and relentlessly pressured the Warriors net, but each shot sailed wide or was tipped away. The final buzzer handed the Bruins a difficult 5-2 loss, ending their 2015 season.

"Very thankful and blessed to coach this great group of guys," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "I have to give credit to Southern Wesleyan for their quality play."

Stephen Grider and Ryan McCarty each scored a goal for the Bruins as the team finishes the 2015 season at 10-7. The program is forever indebted to the five seniors as Joseph Wooster, Daniel Herr, Ryan McCarty, Travis Woodham and Matt Moore each leave a lasting mark on the program they helped to build 4 years ago. It has been a memorable year for the team, and with a core group of young talent there certainly is a bright future ahead for Bruins soccer.
