Turnovers Plague Bruins in 121-81 Loss to The Citadel

Team struggles in the 2nd half as Bruins drop second straight

Box Score
The Citadel scored 49 points off of 34 Bruins turnovers as the Bulldogs poured it on in the 2nd half to defeat the Bruins 121-81 on Friday night. "We didn't do the things we needed to do to be compeitive in the 2nd half," Coach Neal Ring said. "You can't win a game when you turn the ball over like we did tonight. They wanted to pressure us and they did a good job of that all night." The Bruins dropped to 6-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improved to 4-2.

As the game began, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 9-2 advantage. Slowly, the Bruins began to chip away at the Bulldogs lead behind the post play of Tre Tipton as the team closed the gap. After a monster dunk on the fast break by Tipton, the Bruins cut the lead to 23-19. The Bruins also got great bench play from Noah Smith who scored 11 first half points for the team to keep the game close. Still the Bulldogs stayed on top and used their full court pressure defense to force the Bruins into 20 first half turnovers as the Bulldogs took a 56-49 lead into the break.

"I thought we did a decent job of executing our game plan in the first half," Coach Ring said. "We talked about attacking the class on offense and limiting them in transition and I thought we did a good job of that."

In the second half, the Bulldogs continued to capitalize on Bruins turnovers to increase their lead. The Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game, but the team went cold from three-point range as they were 0-8 from beyond the arc in the second half while shooting 34% from the field. The Bulldogs responded by shooting nearly 50% from the field as the team continued to stretch their lead. Dustin Killlough powered the Bruins in the 2nd half by attacking the rim and getting to the line, but each time the Bruins began to make a run, the Bulldogs would go on a run of their own to keep the lead.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Bulldogs handed the Bruins their second-straight loss in a 121-81 win.  "We just need to be consistent," Coach Ring said. "Good teams do things consistenly and we struggled with that tonight."

Dustin Killough led the Bruins with 25 points while Tre' Tipton scored 14 and chipped in 10 rebounds. Noah Smith also scored 11 off the bench for the Bruins as the team fell to 6-2 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will battle Georgia Southern on the road on Monday night.
