Eagles Soar Past Bruins 104-52

Bruins drop 3rd straight in loss to Georgia Southern University

Box Score
The Eagles began with a 26-4 run and never looked back as Georgia Southern handed the Bruins their third straight loss with a 104-52 victory on Monday night. "They made us work and we could not execute consistently," Coach Neal Ring said. "We really wanted to stretch our team in playing these games and I felt like we have gotten better by playing the teams we played against."

The Bruins were coming off back to back losses to Emmanuel College and the Citadel before taking the court in Statesboro, Georgia. The Eagles came into the game fresh off an 84-80 victory over USC Upstate on Friday night. The Bruins would be without guard Shawn Lipscomb who was nursing an ankle injury.

As the game began, the Eagles used their pressure defense to force the Bruins into tough looks as Georgia Southern jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. From there, the Eagles eventually went on a 26-4 run to open the game as the Bruins mustered just 4 points in over 10 minutes of play while shooting just 1-17 from the field. "A lot of the shots we got we had made before, but it was frustrating to see us struggle," Coach Ring said.

The Eagles continued to pour it on while the Bruins couldn't seem to buy a basket. At the half, the Eagles had a commanding 41-20 lead as the Bruins shot just 21% from the field and 7% from three-point range. "We struggled to contain them off the drive and they were really getting us on some screen and dive action," Coach Ring said.

In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to get back into the game as Marshall Riddle knocked down a three to open the scoring for the Bruins and cut into the lead. The Eagles responded with three-straight three's en route to an 18-2 run to open the half. Despite the game being out of reach, the Bruins refused to quit as the team continued to try to claw their way back into the game. The Eagles defensive pressure combined with their 46 points in the paint helped the team to come away with a 104-52 victory over the Bruins.

"I don't regret playing these five games," Coach Ring said as the Bruins have played their third NCAA DI opponent in the last 4 games. "We played some of our best basketball at the beginning of this stretch and we know that our work ethic has to be really good to continue to improve."

Ray Holden led the Bruins with 11 points and 5 rebounds, but he was the only Bruin who scored in double-figures as the team shot just 29% from the field and 21% from behind the arc. The team struggled with turnovers as the team committed 29 which turned into 38 points for Georgia Southern. With the loss, the Bruins have now dropped three straight as the team sits at 6-3 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will travel to Warren Wilson College on Saturday night.
