Jared Simmons scored a pair of goals and Stephen Grider added another as the Bruins soccer team won their 3rd straight match with a 3-1 victory over the John Wesley University Lions on Thursday night.
"I was very pleased with our play tonight," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We controlled the game and came out with good energy and ball movement."
The Bruins came into the game with momentum as the team had won back to back overtime games against Point University and Toccoa Falls College. Due to the effects of hurricane Matthew the previous week, the game location was moved to Alamance Christian School in Graham, North Carolina.
In the opening minutes the Bruins came out strong and possessed well as they looked to gain the advantage. The transition play was strong and the Bruins defensive line worked in sync to keep the Lions attackers from getting open looks on frame. Jared Simmons gave the Bruins the advantage early on as he scored to put the team up 1-0. Simmons would provide the scoring touch again for the Bruins in the first half as the junior forward rifled a shot past the Lions keeper to help the Bruins take a 2-0 lead into the break.
As the second half began, the Bruins continued to be relentless on the attach. The team generated 21 shots throughout the match as they were able to find attacking lanes to put shots on frame. The Lions tried to counter, but couldn't penetrate the Bruins defense as the game began to draw to a close. Stephen Grider then put the game out of reach as he scored on a brilliant strike off a free kick to give the Bruins a 3-0 cushion. Although the Lions scored a late goal, the final buzzer handed the Bruins a well-played 3-1 victory over John Wesley University.
"We stayed organized and did well on both sides of the ball," Coach McCormick said. "I was really pleased with our team effort in this game."
With the win, the Bruins improve to 4-7 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road again for a matchup with Chowan University on Saturday afternoon.
