The Bob Jones University Bruins basketball team closed out their preseason play on a high note as the team defeated USC Salkehatchie 78-71 on Monday night at the Davis Field House.
"Our guys worked hard this past week to be able to speed up our tempo and play at a faster pace," Head Coach Neal Ring said. "This was a good night to play guys some extended minutes and see how they would respond."
The team spread the floor tonight and had great ball movement offensively. Quez Fisher ruled the post as the sophomore chipped in 14 points on 6-7 shooting from the field. Fisher was just one of four Bruins to end up in double figures on the night. Marshall Riddle carried the scoring for the team as the captain scored 20 points in the win.
In the early stages, both teams looked to establish momentum as they traded baskets and the lead. The team showed great improvement from their previous preseason game as the team was smarter in possession and worked to get open shots. At the half, the Bruins held a 34-29 advantage.
Throughout the second half, the Bruins continued to maintain the upper hand while they played well defensively in forcing the Indians into tough looks. Tre Tipton ruled the boards as the sophomore forward had 15 rebounds and 10 points on the night. Despite the late run by the Indians, the Bruins held on for a 78-71 victory.
"I was pleased with our rebounding tonight. I thought we controlled the glass," Coach Ring said. "We need to continue to work on our defensive communication and cut down on our unforced turnovers. We now have 10 days to prepare for the opener and we'll be working hard to be ready for that."
With the win, the Bruins close out preseason play at 1-1. The team will continue to prepare for their season opener coming up on October 28 as the team plays in an opening season tournament in Pikeville, Kentucky.
