Another day and another tough home loss for the Bruins as the team fell to Columbia International University 70-65 on Saturday night at the Davis Field House.
"Our inability to hit outside shots really hurt us tonight," Bruins Coach Neal Ring said. "But I really like that we did a great job with scoring inside the paint. Credit to the Rams as they beat us tonight by playing well. For us, we have to get better and keep improving with each game."
The Bruins came into the game on Saturday afternoon on the heels of a tough loss to Piedmont International University on Friday night. In their matchup against the Rams, the Bruins knew they could rely on the post play of their bigs as the team had a size advantage in the block.
Quez Fisher got the Bruins offense going as the big freshman hammered home a dunk for the first points of the game. The Rams came charging back as the team got red hot from three-point range in the first half making 8 of 12 three-point attempts. Rams guard Damian Hurta couldn't seem to miss as the Rams built a double digit lead.
The Bruins struggled to respond as the team was cold from the outside shooting just over 20% from beyond the arc in the half. Still, the Bruins stayed in the game behind the dominant post play of Quez Fisher. The Bruins closed out the half strong as the trailed just 42-38 at the break.
In the second half, the two teams traded baskets as the score remained close with the Rams keeping the lead. Then, the Bruins went on a 6-0 run to climb back and take the lead. But costly turnovers by the Bruins allowed the Rams to take the lead back as the game began to come to a close. The Bruins had a chance to tie the game late, but a last possession attempt by Marshall Riddle didn't drop as the Rams held on for a 70-65 win.
"We need to put this behind us and come out to practice on Monday focused on our next opponent," Coach Ring said afterwards. "We know these games now will make us better later in the season. We just need to get better with each game and be better today than we were yesterday. Our guys have a lot of heart and I am confident they are going to come out and work hard so we're ready for the next game."
Quez Fisher had a solid game for the Bruins with 23 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks. Nate Ellenwood scored 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds. The story of the game was the Bruins three-point percentage as the team shot just 9% from behind the arc in the 2nd half and just 15% for the game. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 1-5 on the season.
Next up, the Bruins will travel to Dahlonega, Georgia on Tuesday to take on the University of North Georgia.
