The Bruins suffered a tough road loss in their final match of the 2016 regular season as the team fell to Georgia Gwinnett College 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
"This was a tough game against a quality opponent," Bruins Coach Jesse McCormick said. "Still, even with some fatigue we had a number of guys that showed some good things."
The Bruins came into the match on the heels of a 0-0 draw against Columbia International on Thursday night. They knew they would be in for a tough test against the Grizzlies as GGC was 11-3-3 on the season and had earned the #1 ranking in the upcoming conference tournament for NAIA. It was senior day and the Grizzlies fans wanted to send off their seniors with a win.
In the opening minutes, the two teams traded possession but neither was able to sustain their offensive attack. The Grizzlies had several chances on frame, but the Bruins defense stood strong to clear out chances while freshman Isaac Landry came up with several saves in his first start.
As the game wore on, the Grizzlies began to take control as they moved the ball into the attacking third. At the midway point of the half, the Grizzlies would break the tie as Andrew White headed in a goal off the corner kick to make it 1-0. The Bruins tried to counter, but had trouble sustaining possession in the attack. Just before the half came to a close, the Grizzlies scored off back to back goals by Jack Gurr to take a 3-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game but were able to only generate four shots throughout the contest. The Grizzlies countered as Jack Gurr completed his hat trick with a goal in the 67th minute to put GGC up 4-0. The Grizzlies tacked on one more just before the final buzzer as Georgia Gwinnett won handily 5-0.
"We are hopeful for the at large bid to the national tournament and playing quality teams will help us in our opportunities for postseason play," Coach McCormick said.
Gurr was the hero for the Grizzlies in the match as he recorded three goals and one assist in the win. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-10-1 on the season. As NCCAA Regional Tournaments finish up this weekend, the Bruins will await the news as to whether or not they will get an at large bid.
