The Bruins got a spark right when they needed it most as John Wilson scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Bruins to a 3-0 shutout over Trinity Baptist College in the first preseason game of the 2016 season.
"We struggled to play with composure, but when we did we had some good ball movement," Coach Jesse McCormick said.
The Bruins knew they were in for a tough test as they battled the defending NCCAA DII national champion Eagles. Despite the heat and humidity, the Bruins were able to show several bright spots in the win. As the match began, the Eagles came out strong and began to push the ball into the attacking third. Andrew Kester came up with several good saves for the Bruins, while the defensive line helped to thwart offensive attacks. John Wilson helped the Bruins get on the scoreboard first as he scored a goal off an assist from Abraham Garcia. Wilson scored again just before the half to increase the Bruins lead to 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Bruins continued to execute good combination play in the midfield and the attacking third. John Wilson came up big for the team again, but this time the senior forward found the foot of Stephen Grider who finished the play to make it 3-0. With the game all but decided, the Bruins continued to execute well on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the team was able to match the speed of the Eagles to prevent quality chances on frame. As the final whistle blew, the Bruins had captured the clean sheet with a 3-0 victory.
"At times our combination play looked good, but we still need to continue to work on consistency and composure," Coach McCormick said.
The team will return home to prepare for their next preseason game coming up on Tuesday night as they welcome North Greenville University.
