The Bruins soccer team closed out preseason play with a 1-0 victory over North Greenville University on Tuesday night. "We have some positives to take away but still things to work on as well," Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We were able to take advantage of our opportunities."
The team came into Tuesday's match on the heels of an impressive 3-0 shutout over Trinity Baptist College on Friday. The team combined impressive play on both sides of the ball to capture the clean sheet. The Bruins hoped they could carry the momentum as they played their final preseason match in front of their hometown fans at Alumni Stadium.
As the match began, the Bruins controlled possession and executed good combination play to move into positions to score. Defensively, the team relied on the strong play of goalkeeper Andrew Kester, who made several brilliant saves throughout the match. The Bruins broke into the scoring column first as John Wilson continued his preseason hot streak as he buried a shot to make it 1-0. Even with the lead, the Bruins continued to apply the pressure as Stephen Grider created several opportunities to score. At the half, the Bruins still held a slim advantage.
In the second half, the Crusaders looked to even the score. Defensively, the Bruins continued to play smart and keep the opposition from gaining open looks. Despite opportunities offensively, the Bruins couldn't increase their lead. With under ten minutes to play, the Crusaders looked to make one last charge for the equalizer. Their attempts were knocked aside as the Bruins held on for the 1-0 win.
Afterwards, the two teams had some fun with a penalty shootout exhibition. With the win, the Bruins closed out preseason play at 2-0. The team will open the 2016 regular season on Saturday night as they welcome Johnson and Wales University at 7 p.m.
