Box Score
Despite a hard-fought effort, the Lady Bruins came up short on Friday night in Tampa, Florida as the team fell to the Florida College Falcons 76-67. Sha'Ron Brunson set a new single game school record with 33 points as the team falls to 6-9 on the season.
"We had a good effort against a good team tonight," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "We faced a lot of pressure tonight and I felt like we responded well."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of back to back victories, including a hard-fought overtime win over Trinity College on Thursday night.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins were able to find open shooters but the team rode the hot hand of Sha'Ron Brunson as the junior guard drove through the lane for points. Still, the Falcons clung to a 14-11 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
As the second quarter began, the Bruins used a 11-3 run to open the quarter and regain the lead. The team continued to handle the Falcons defensive pressure by working the ball around the perimeter and converting on open looks. Despite a late run by the Falcons near the end of the quarter, the Bruins held a 36-33 lead at the break.
Back-to-back baskets by the Falcons opened the 2nd half of scoring as the Bruins again played from behind. Still, the team battled back behind the scoring touch of Brunson as they tied the game 46-46. But another late run by the Falcons gave Florida College a 57-51 lead with just one quarter to play.
In the final frame of the game, the Bruins came out with a quick start to bring it back to a one-point game. The Bruins couldn't climb back to take the lead though as the Falcons responded with short runs to maintain the upper hand. Saje Schlatterer led the Falcons with 17 points, including several clutch shots in the 4th quarter as Florida College held on for the 76-67 win.
"It was a battle tonight and we really kept our composure and played under control throughout the game," Coach LeViere said. "Our defense let us down a bit, particularly in the 4th quarter but overall pleased with our effort. We have lots to learn from and take from this game."
Sha'Ron Brunson led the team with 33 points while shooting 58% from the floor. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-9 on the season. Next up, the team will have another road contest as they battle Furman University in Greenville on Monday night.
