The Bruins soccer team dropped another tough match on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Johnson and Wales University 2-0 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Bruins have lost five of their last six with their most recent contest coming in a 1-1 draw with Trinity Baptist College. Road games have been particularly tough on the Bruins as the team is 1-7 in games away from Alumni Stadium.
"We had a couple of mistakes that cost us today," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said. "I have to give credit to JWU as they kept their undefeated season and getting things done."
Both teams traded possession and opportunity in the first half as each looked to gain the upper hand. Jesse Rush was able to find an opportunity on frame early on but his shot was saved by Wildcat keeper John Lowes. The Bruins played hard defensively but their aggressiveness cost them as Danyon Moore was given a caution in the first half. As the buzzer sounded for halftime, the Bruins and Wildcats remained scoreless at 0-0.
In the second half, the Wildcats worked the ball into the attacking third as they looked to take the lead. Tito Villanueva found the back of the net in the 49th minute of play as the Wildcats went up 1-0. The Bruins came right back as Andrew Zhang fired a shot that went high. The Wildcats continued to pressure the Bruins net but the defense was able to turn aside opportunities and Isaac Landry made five saves on the night.
As the match was coming to a close, the Bruins knew they needed to pull out all the stops to try to get equalizing goal. Their efforts to score left them shorthanded defensively and the Wildcats took advantage as Jalen Jackson headed home a goal in the 86th minute to give JWU a 2-0 advantage. The Bruins couldn't recover as the match ended 2-0.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 4-10-1 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will be back home on Tuesday night as they finish the regular season with a home match against Georgia Gwinnett College.
