A pair of second half goals were too much to overcome as the Bruins fell to St. Andrews University 3-1 on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium.
"They are a great program and did a really good job of moving the ball especially in the second half," Bruins Head Coach Jesse McCormick said.
The Knights scored the lone goal of the first half off the heels of a near-goal by Bruins midfielder Karl Walker. Walker had created space but couldn't get off a shot just in front of the Knights net. On the ensuing possession, Knights striker Julio Rico found the back of the net as he beat Andrew Kester with a point blank shot to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The Knights speed and athleticism proved to be a tough matchup for the Bruins defense all match but Andrew Zhang, Danyon Moore and Tommy Aker played well on the Bruins back line.
In the second half the Knights scored a pair of goals courtesy of Ruben Vaca. His first goal came on a rocket shot 20 yards out as it bent into the lower left portion of the net to give SAU a 2-0 advantage. Vaca's second goal was similar to his first as he created space and scored on a brilliant strike in the 65th minute to increase the lead 3-0.
It looked to be a clean sheet for the Knights until Andrew Peterson notched a goal off a feed from Caleb Myers as the Bruins scored with under a minute remaining. Unfortunately it was too little too late as the Bruins fell 3-1.
"When you play good teams you get put under a microscope a little bit so we'll look at the things we can work on," Coach McCormick said. "We had some good movement as a team and worked hard so we can move forward and continue to work on those things."
Andrew Peterson scored his third goal of the season while Caleb Myers picked up his first assist with the team. Andrew Kester made 8 saves on the night as the Bruins fall to 4-7 on the season.
Next up, the Bruins will be on the road against Truett-McConnell University in Cleveland, Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
