The Bruins battled the Wofford College Terriers (NCAA DI) on Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Although the Bruins fell behind early, the team continued to battle as they eventually fell to the Terriers 96-65 to fall to 2-6 on the season. The offensive production was hurt in the game with Justin Matthews out with an injury.
"I was really proud of our team," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "We played really well for most of the game. We really struggled scoring in the first half without Justin but we are really starting to gel and we hope to continue to improve with each game."
The Bruins shot 42% from the floor but struggled from beyond the arc shooting just 20% in the game. The game would be played in the newly built Jerry Richardson Arena which certainly provided a great venue for the teams.
"It's a beautiful facility and it was such an honor to play in that setting," Coach Uwarow said. "Coach Young is a great coach and Wofford has been to the NCAA tournament a number of times under his leadership. He helped me out a lot as a young coach when I was just getting started so it was an honor to compete against him."
The Bruins found themselves in a hole early on as Wofford jumped out to a commanding 21-2 lead. The Bruins struggled to score but the team continued to work hard on both sides of the ball as they tried to cut into the lead. Still, the early deficit presented a challenge for the Bruins as they trailed 48-28 at the half.
In the second half, the Bruins three-pronged scoring attack of Dustin Killough, Nate Ellenwood and Jayson Barnhart handled most of the offensive production as the trio combined for 33 second half points. The team was able to cut the lead down to 15 after Nate Ellenwood made a shot in the paint but the Terriers led 60-45. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Bruins would come the rest of the game as the Terriers went on to capture a 96-65 victory.
"We got a lot of help from our bench today and our scoring was really evenly distributed which is what we've been working towards," Coach Uwarow said.
Dustin Killough led the Bruins with 21 points on the night while shooting 64% from the field. Nate Ellenwood had 17 points to go along with 5 boards while Jayson Barnhart finished with 11 points. The Bruins took care of the ball on the night with only 11 turnovers.
Next up, the team will welcome Erksine College on Monday night to the Davis Field House. Tip-off for the game is at 7 p.m.
