Box Score
Basketball is a game of runs. This mantra was proved again on Saturday night as the Running Eagles used late half runs to defeat the Bob Jones University Bruins 84-72 in Marietta, Georgia. Several Bruins scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the team falls to 12-18 on the season.
"This was a tough loss on the road for us," Bruins Coach Neal Ring said. "We played well in stretches and this was a quality road challenge for us as we wrap up the regular season and prepare for the regional tournament."
From the opening tip, the Eagles and Bruins remained close as each exchanged baskets to try to establish momentum. The Bruins held the slight edge as three-point shots from Dustin Killough and Marshall Riddle put the team up 15-7 early on. The Bruins built up to a double digit advantage at the midway point of the half before the Running Eagles began to mount a comeback. Mike Miller sparked the Eagles with back to back baskets as the team used a 16-3 run to overtake the Bruins lead and close out the half with a 41-38 advantage.
The Bruins used their halftime adjustments as the team opened the second half on an 8-0 run to regain the lead. The Eagles refused to back down and stopped the Bruins run with key baskets as the score remained close. But another costly run by the Eagles with just over seven minutes remaining put the Bruins down by double digits 73-62.
As the game began to draw to a close, the Bruins relied on the scored touch of Dustin Killough who scored seven-straight points for the Bruins. Unfortunately, the Eagles matched the Bruins point for point as they maintained the lead. Jonathan Beausejour ended any hopes of a Bruins late rally as he buried a three-point dagger as the Eagles closed out the Bruins 84-72.
Dustin Killough led the Bruins with 16 points on the night while shooting 55% from the floor. Nate Ellenwood scored 14 points and Quez Fisher finished with 13 to go along with 8 rebounds. With the loss, the Bruins end their regular season at 12-18. The team will await the final seeding for the NCCAA DII South Region tournament which will begin Thursday at the Davis Field House.
