Onto the Semifinals as Lady Bruins Defeat PIU 88-29

Box Score
The Lady Bruins ran away with the victory in the opening round of the NCCAA DII South Region Playoffs with a 88-29 victory over #6 seeded Piedmont International University. Hannah Tompkins reach an impressive milestone in her career as the senior guard finished with 22 points to eclipse 1,000 career points.

"It was a good game for us," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "Our shooting was right where it needed to be and we were able to work through out offensive sets. We had a good balance of feeding the post and then taking the open outside shot."

The Bruins entered the tournament with the #3 seed matching them up against the #6 Piedmont International for the third time this season. The third time continued to be the charm for the Lady Bruins as the team dominated on both sides of the ball throughout the game.

From the opening tip, the Bruins picked up the tempo and found open lanes to score as the team jumped out to a 15-4 advantage. Defensively, the Bruins pressured Piedmont into numerous turnovers.

In the second quarter, the Bruins offense continued to roll as the team stretched their lead 38-15. But the team wasn't done as they went on another 12-0 run to take a 45-15 lead into the half.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Bruins continued to play great defense while working the ball to the open shooter on offense. The team also dominated on the glass as Sha'Ron Brunson and Madison Shupe combined for 25 rebounds on the night. The Bruins had four players score in double figures on the night as the team rolled to an 88-29 victory.

"We played under control tonight and forced low percentage shots," Coach LeViere said. "Our defense was good and we worked really hard on rebounding. We appreciate the good effort from PIU. Now it is time for us to get some rest and get ready for tomorrow.

Hannah Tompkins led the Bruins with 22 points as the senior became the second women's basketball player to pass 1,000 career points. Madison Shupe finished the night with a double-double as she scored 13 points and added 14 rebounds. Kylee Leffew finished the game with 16 points while Chastiva Weatheroy had a strong night for the team in the post as she finished with 11 points.

The team will advance to the semifinal round tomorrow night as they battle #2 seeded Trinity College at 5 p.m.
